The Shuttle is still here. Maybe China, Russia or both will control space if the USA continues on with inept designs with no funds--as Mitt says he would rather work on housing than go to moon.
Both Challenger and Columbia could have been avoided with proper senior level management attention. The shuttle should still be flying. However these accidents set the ” not safe” mindset in motion which could never be overcome. One must consider the ” human frailty ” aspect, similar situations will occur on future programs. When will we ever learn, one must stay the course on design concepts and not jump from this to that. The Shuttle is a perfect example, we are going to a less than ideal (apollo /mpcv) concept rather than ideal (shuttle) , because we over emphasized the shuttle negatives rather than improving it leaving us with an inferior design concept thereby leaving us with no operational system and an inferior one when it is finally operational. Then the ” self destruction” cycle repeats. Let us welcome China to Preeminence in Space OR let us Evolve and Improve Shuttle. IT IS STILL HERE!!
