Safety gone berserk--shuttle safe--return to flight

Newt, we must get shuttle flying ASAP. CAIB did nt get it right , shuttle is safe, need proper mgt. Putting shuttle in museum is irrational. As is paying the Russians. We must get it flying again , if we do not the USA will be set back decades. Think new starts will not have significant failures? NASA will have future CAIB circus es, we can’t afford this. Chinese will take over space and eventually control the earth while shuttle sits in a museum. As aldrin says we should evolve and improve shuttle. Director’s report: I did a good radio show this morning on Iowa radio station KMA AM/FM; discussing the future of the space program and
how listeners should ask candidates and their staff to support a bold space program to take America back to the moon and on to Mars; and not surrender space and our high tech future to China.

The Coalition to Save Manned Space Exploration Rick Perry’s
response to my request: 
“More than four decades ago America captured the world’s imagination by putting a man on the moon, highlighting an era of
excellence in space exploration. Unfortunately, with the final landing of the Shuttle Atlantis and no indication of plans for future missions, the Obama administration has set a significantly different milestone by shutting down our nation’s legacy of leadership in human spaceflight and exploration, leaving American astronauts with no alternative but to hitchhike into space.

The Obama Administration continues to lead federal agencies and programs astray, this time forcing NASA away from its original
purpose of space exploration, and ignoring its groundbreaking past and enormous future potential. It is time to restore NASA to its core
purpose of manned space exploration, and to define our vision for 21st Century space exploration, not in terms of what we cannot do
but instead in terms of what we will do.

In my home state, Houston is home to the Johnson Space Center (JSC), which was established in 1961 as the Manned Spacecraft Center. JSC is home to NASA’s astronaut corps, and is the principal training site for space shuttle crews and International Space Station
Expedition crews from the U.S. and our space station partner
nations. JSC’s civil service workforce consisted of about 3,000 employees, the majority of whom are professional engineers and
scientists. About 50 companies provided more than 12,000 contract personnel who supported operations at JSC. An estimated 4,000 contract positions will be lost due to the end of the shuttle program. JSC is currently working with its contractors to try to repurpose these positions.”

 The shuttle retirement is totally irrational. The CAIB got it wrong,
the shuttle is not unsafe, just required more attention to design problem, and increased attention to failure reports, and system engineer recommendations. All complex systems have similar issues. DOD handles these on their systems with out the NASA circus, and
down time.

The shuttle should be returned to flight ASAP. Do you know how long these new systems will take to get to the shuttle stage? Do you think they will not have failures? They will have similar down times
as shuttle if we don’t get NASA into DOD , we can’t afford a 20 to 30 yr delay to get back to where we are nor the CAIB type circus
and ignorant decisions on shuttle safety. Think that will not happen
again? America , the shuttle is safe and can be improved, read Aldrin paper– evolve and improve the shuttle. What the USA is doing is an unbelievable waste and will set up back for decades. This is what this adm wants—Americans , WAKE UP.
The shuttle is safe with proper management controls. The CAIB
make light of the ” NASA culture” ie, getting by with a failure and continuing to until it becomes acceptable.. Also making light of probability calculations/assessments from system to system and
from manager to engineer. Reliability calculations are not used in go/no go launch decisions , only used in design trade studies.
CAIB wrong about uncertainty in this area thereby concluding shuttle unsafe. The shuttle had a good record, with proper attention to significant problems, these accidents would not have occurred.
Mike griffin planned to use shuttle until 2020.

DOD does not go through the CAIB, Challenger circus , nor should
NASA. If DOD was in command we would be flying shuttle to day.

Like sts 125 hubble repair mission approved by Griffin, Would have
not flown if the chairs of the ASAP or CAIB had to approve it.
These people, well intentioned ,have placed this magnificent vehicle in the museum. We have got to stop this overkill, it will happen again. There always will be some risks associated with space flight and will be with the new programs. We understand the shuttle much better than we will cots and SLS/Orion for many years. The nation can’t afford another 20to 40 years to get to where we are
today. Like aldrin said , we should do a Russians have done, build on existing programs, I.e. The shuttle. The alternative be very safe, and sit at home which is what we are doing. Also, critical on orbit ops are not being accomplished . All of our leaders in space have
know for years we have placed significant assets in orbit, and maintenance is required , but they went along with these accident board decisions—SAFETY GONE BESERK.

And I am a former NASA employee, from Safety.

We need to place NASA in the DOD, we will get much more accomplished. They do not suffer these boards, media, etc, after mishaps.

For those reading this, please get friends interested in space to contact their friends, media , etc, let’s get the shuttle flying, it is still here, we have the facilities, personnel, etc –it can be done. It is vital to the security of the USA.
