Stupid not to keep shuttle flying--what supporters have said

# 438
21:12, Dec 14, Mr. Joseph Pierce Jr., NJ
I agree that our nation should continue to utilize the benefit of the space shuttle orbiter fleet to continue to service our space needs until "Project Constellation" is fully approved & operational and can take over space efforts. Given our shuttles extreme capacity when compared to international space craft ( 1 shuttle can equal 7 Russian spacecraft) it becomes clear how useful and necessary it is to remain independent and able to not only service our own space interest but to continue to provide service for our international allies as well.

I am a shamed at the America my country. Going to temporary discontinue the space program. I think we need to keep it running until Constellation is finished. Our president should be a shamed.

The United States is becoming a third world nation under the current administration. The President doesn't have the experience nor the wisdom to lead our great country. I'm am proud that we Americans put race behind us and elected a black President but we elected the wrong man. He's not qualified and his decision to scuttle the Shuttle proves it.

retiring the spaces shuttles is extremely short sighted and makes us totally dependent on the russians for manned missions. the president has been ill-adivised in this regard. keep those birds flying until their replacement is ready.

It will put our people back to work with a common cause to lift not only our country but the spirit of the American people. Please do NOT hurt our space program. Sincerely, David France, citizen

It is stupid to stop flying the Shuttle, stupid to kill Constellation and REALLY stupid to pay the Russians to get to our OWN Space Station!!!!

We are so close to loosing the shuttles and we need them. Ask Sen. John Glen, he knows. Pass this to everyone.
# 406

The Space Shuttle is a proven system. I agree with John Glenn that it is better to spend a billion a year to preserve our spacefaring capabilities than to throw our money at the Russians.

The Space Shuttle has long been one of America's greatest achievements both in space and beyond. Our nation deserves to keep the Space Shuttle program alive and well as handing the reigns of space travel and exploration over to the Russians would be a catastrophic crime after everything we as Americans have accomplished. The US Space Program has long been our beacon of hope and prosperity ever since putting a man on the moon. We did not become the world's leader in space only to bow down now and PAY the Russians to take us into space from here on out! To think we would have to pay $55.8 million per ride to space to the Russians each and every time we wanted to go to space is absurd not to mention a gross negligence of our money, our jobs here at home and our national security! NO way should we be making the Russians richer, while jeopardizing our own jobs, engineering, manufacturing, etc. here at home! It is a matter of national security and economic stabilty, not to mention a matter of principle! My father was a mechanical engineer who worked on the Space Shuttle program back when this country still produced and manufactured everything here at home in the US. I grew up with the Space Shuttle ever since its maiden voyage in the 70's and beyond. We grew up knowing about the wonders of space, engineering, science and technology and the great achievement the Space Shuttle represented for America. It is as great today as it was in the beginning....Please SAVE the SPACE SHUTTLE PROGRAM and save our national heritage, our national economy and our national security!!!

Keep the shuttle program until it can be retired by something that won't jeopardize highly educated personnel and expensive equipement. Other programs will come with other risk, for everthing gained there is something forfeited. That's just a law of nature.

We must not give up our ability to explore the final frontier - we must not let our pioneering spirit die! We need to keep the shuttle flying until a suitable replacement is developed. Also, it is very risky for our investment in the space station to put ourselves in a position to have to rely completely on other countries to service the ISS. While I applaud developing commercial space travel, decommissioning our only existing manned and heavy lifting vehicles before the commercial programs are anywhere close to operational is exceedingly premature! America needs to keep the space shuttle flying for a lot of important reasons!

I took my 10 year old son to Kennedy Space Station on May 3 and 4th prior to the launch of Atlantis. This is an amazing project and should be kept alive so my son can have the chance to say 'I could be an astronaut'. I grew up in the day when all stopped to watch Apollo and Gemini on TV's in schools and the workplace. If everyone had the chance to go to KSC and experience the magic, they would be hooked like my son and I. I hope to go to the next launch with my family in September and would love to know that there will be more. Please go and see for yourself and understand that our lives today are so much better because of the space program. From cake mixes, TV dinners to microwave oven, MRI's, LASIKs and our precious cell phones and computers we are living the world of NASA and we don't even know it. Don't give up on this national treasure. We, Americans can stand taller because we have NASA, and have stood on the shoulder of giants.

It is important to maintain capabilities. Commercialisation has turned out devastating in many cases. Economic downturn - and then end of the program? This program triggers so many efforts in other fields, a horror to abandon it.

Let's not throw away a perfectly good space program for foolish reasons. We should not have to rely on other nations to get to the ISS we spent so much money to build. If we let the Shuttle program die, the ISS will eventually prematurely deorbit or fail for our lack of being able to get a heavy-lift vehicle up there to fix/replace someting. This is an incredibly FOOLISH and shortsighted decision to end the program. Please do not make this mistake. Daniel Padien Arlington, MA

Getting rid of the shuttle program in the United States will be like getting rid of Major League Baseball, or apple pie. It's part of American culture, it's one of the few things that most people look upon the US favorably for, and it shows young people the wonders that not only Americans, but human beings are capable of. Keep the shuttle flights alive!

What a tragedy to end this aspect of our space program, deeply saddening. We watch NASA every day and are in support of the Shuttle missions. So much dedication and hard work have been poured into this, such a shame to see it disappear. The end of an era.
