  1. JSC NMA Presents - Tom Sanzone

JSC NMA Presents: Leadership Lessons Learned Over Four and a Half Decades at JSC - Tom Sanzone. Tom started his career with JSC in 1968, supporting Hamilton Sundstrand's efforts with the Portable Life Support System (backpack) used during Apollo. After training the majority of the Apollo astronauts (including Neil Armstrong), Tom became Engineering Manager then served as General Manager for Hamilton Sundstrand's Houston Office for 22 years before retiring in 2011. Tom remained active with the JSC Team, serving as Advisor to the NMA Board for several years. Tom was a charter member of the Joint Leadership Team and received many awards, including the Silver Snoopy, NASA Exceptional Public Service Medal, and the Rotary National Award for Space Achievement's Stellar Award. Tom is a dynamic, engaging speaker, and you don't want to miss his leadership lessons! Please bring your lunch!

The Man in Black was certainly a great one. We are about to send someone to the Space Station for a year-long mission. If you could take a trip to the Station, how long would you like to stay? A day?   1. Back in the Saddle Event Replay

Did you miss our Back in the Saddle Event with Mark Rohr? Don't fret, you can catch the rebroadcast on local JSC-TV at: 10 a.m. or 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 21 or Friday, Jan. 23.

The Back in the Saddle Event serves to renew our resolve for personal and workplace safety and health for 2015. Mark Rohr recently joined League City as City Manager, with 31 years of local government experience. He served as City Manager for Joplin, Missouri 2004-2014. He led Joplin as city manager when the deadly EF-5 tornado destroyed a third of the city; claiming 161 lives. Rohr shares lessons learned in dealing with this tragedy.

  1. "Keeping It Real" Event Feb. 10 - Save the Date

The third "Keeping it Real" event will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 10, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the Silvermoon Room at Space Center Houston featuring guest speakers Ellen Ochoa and Kirk Shireman. This event is a collaborative effort between the AAERG, ASIA ERG and HERG.

The event is designed to allow NASA JSC's workforce the opportunity to have an interactive discussion and pose random questions to senior leaders in a relaxed setting. There will also be index cards on each table to allow members of the audience an opportunity to write their questions down and have them read to the speakers. If you would like your to submit a question, but won't be able to attend, please send to Kai Harris and we will try to make sure your question is answered and the response sent to you.

  1. O&A ERG: NASA LGBT Survey Results - Jan. 27

Next Tuesday, Jan. 27, the Out & Allied ERG will host Erin Cech, Ph.D. of Rice University's Dept. of Sociology for a lunchtime brown bag talk. Dr. Cech will be discussing "LGBT Professionals at NASA: Results from a Multi-Center Survey," a report she authored along with Tom Waidzunas, Ph.D. of Temple University and William Rothwell of Rice University. Her talk will cover the findings from a survey distributed at JSC last fall through the Out & Allied ERG. She will be addressing the NASA LGBT workplace experience, touching on the formal policies and informal work climates that LGBT employees encounter at NASA, consequences of the climate for LGBT employees' well-being, as well as workplace differences across centers and across demographics. You're invited to bring your lunch, join the conversation, and learn about the next steps planned for this study.

  1. Investigating Aircraft and Flight System Mishaps

This course provides instruction in aviation and flight systems mishap investigation basics and policy. Topics discussed include: NASA NPR 8621.1 mishap investigation requirements and terminology, investigator qualifications, board composition and field techniques. Evidence identification, recovery and protection, witness interviewing and site mapping along with individual component systems and material failures are key areas discussed during sessions on field investigation. The course contains extensive accident investigation information generally applicable to aviation accidents, which can be applied to other areas of flight systems mishaps, such as unmanned aerial vehicles, rockets, balloons and other space flight systems mishaps such as Genesis.   1. Beginners Russian Phase One Language Course

Russian Phase One is an introductory course designed to acquaint the novice student with certain elementary aspects of the Russian language and provide a brief outline of Russian history and culture. Our goal is to introduce students to skills and strategies necessary for successful foreign language study that they can apply immediately in the classroom. The linguistic component of this class consists of learning the Cyrillic alphabet and a very limited number of simple words and phrases, which will serve as a foundation for further language study.   1. Skiff Building at Ed White Elementary E-STEM

As part of the E-STEM program at Ed White Elementary, 5th graders will be applying math and engineering principles while building Bevin's Skiffs in an after school program. Mentors are needed to assist the 5th graders with building these boats while showing how math and engineering are used in real world applications.   1. Join us on a trip to the moon!

The Expedition Center at the George Observatory is holding a Family Space Day on Saturday, Jan. 24 from about 3 to 8 p.m.

For purchase are tickets to complete a 45-minute Expedition Center mission to the moon! Expedition Center mission tickets may be purchased for $10 a person online.

After enjoying a trip to space, stay for the evening and look at the night sky through our telescopes. Telescope tickets can be purchased at the Observatory gift shop.

George Observatory is located in the heart of Brazos Bend State Park. Admission to the park is $7 for adults; kids under 12 are free.

  1. January Cosmic Explorations Presentation

The Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI) invites all inquisitive adults to attend "SETI: Real vs. Reel", a presentation by Dr. Jill Tarter of the SETI Institute. This free public presentation Jan. 29 is the third presentation in LPI's 2014-2015 Cosmic Explorations Speaker Series "Science" on the Silver Screen.

LPI's Cosmic Explorations presentation begins at 7:30 p.m. and will be followed by a light reception. Registration is required: http://www.lpi.usra.edu/education/lectures/registration/.
