55 years since the launch of the first station in the world that has reached the surface of the Moon

September 12, 1959 from the Baikonur Cosmodrome launch vehicle "Vostok-L" with the automatic interplanetary station (AWS) "Luna 2". September 14 AMC "Luna 2" became the first station in the world that has reached the surface of the moon. Time of landing was registered by Soviet and foreign observatories.

"Luna 2" was an airtight container in the shape of a ball, which housed scientific measuring and electronic equipment. In scientific equipment included instruments for registration of nuclear radiation and elementary particles (scintillation counters), Geiger counters, magnetometers, detectors micrometeorites. To transmit information to Earth on AMC had three radio transmitter operating at different frequencies.

The station is delivered to the surface of the moon two metal hollow sphere composed in the manner of a soccer ball from pentagons-pennants with the coat of arms of the Soviet Union and the inscription "USSR" on the one hand and "the USSR. September 1959 "on the other. In a collision with the moon station metal pennants flew over the surface of the Earth's satellite.

Major scientific achievement was the discovery of the lunar mission of the solar wind and its direct measurement. Analysis of the information obtained showed that the moon has virtually no intrinsic magnetic field and radiation belt.
