Cooperation between countries would probably be similar to that with the European side of the ExoMars mission, a Mars exploration project of the European Space Agency in collaboration with Roscosmos

MOSCOW, April 11. /ITAR-TASS/. Russia and China are negotiating scope for large-scale joint space projects, Russian Federal Space Agency deputy head Sergey Saveliev told a teleconference at ITAR-TASS ahead of Cosmonautics Day marked in Russia on April 12.

The Roscosmos official said on Friday that Russian-Chinese co-operation was currently confined to China purchasing space technology items from Russia. "Last year, we agreed with our Chinese counterparts to discuss possibilities for broader co-operation, which means implementing one, two or three scientific projects," he said. "We are working on these proposals at the moment."

Saveliev noted growing willingness among Chinese partners to co-operate. Interaction would probably be similar to that with the European side of the ExoMars mission, a Mars exploration project of the European Space Agency in collaboration with Roscosmos.

MOSCOW, April 11 (RIA Novosti) – As Russia and China are coordinating on major future research projects in space, European countries have also expressed a desire to expand joint cosmic efforts with Moscow, a senior Russian space official said Friday.

"Europe does not intend to introduce sanctions [in the field of space research]. On the contrary, all our negotiations confirm the European desire to expand cooperation," said deputy head of Roscosmos Sergey Saveliev in a video conference devoted to Astronautics Day.

He added that Russia and Europe are closely linked and depend upon each other in space projects.

Bilateral cooperation is in full swing, Saveliev added.

"Russian-Chinese cooperation is already happening. Last year we agreed to discuss expanding it, to work on one, two, or three large-scale research projects, and now we are looking at proposals and waiting for updates from both sides," he said.

Saveliev suggested the partnership arrangement should be the same as on the ExoMars program with Europe.

"We should divide the responsibilities, and each side would finance the part that it is developing. And the results will be used without restrictions by both sides," Saveliev concluded.

Roscosmos celebrated Astronautics Day with a video conference on Friday. Saveliev made the comments on international cooperation following NASA's recent moves to suspend joint projects with Russia.

Last week, NASA announced the suspension of cooperation with Russia in connection with the situation in Ukraine, with the exception of the International Space Station. Many NASA officials expressed displeasure with the decision, noting that scientific cooperation should not be politicized.

NASA eased its position on Russia this week, as the agency encouraged the participation of US scientists at an upcoming international space research conference in Moscow this summer.
