This is not a legend. I am an airline pilot and at the time of this incident I was operating regularly to Frankfurt. I was told of this event within days of its occurrence around early 2000 by our own engineers.

There was also a PIA Rolls Royce engined 747 that landed in Manchester from New York. The engineers who maintained my aircraft also maintained the PIA aircraft. The fan blades were severley damaged, but the Captain wanted to continue to Pakistan. The engineers had to ground the aircraft and refused to release ti for service.
