The Space Transportation System ---- a truck to put exploration vehicles in orbit!
Cots , Orion just taxi's, not manned rated & many years will pass before they fly, & WE STILL DON'T have a vehicle that will place a large tonnage in orbit--- we threw that away!
But, we have Anti space leadership in DC!
The Shuttle can both deliver and retrieve payloads from space; it is a fully integrated transport and servicing system in low Earth orbit. The famous Hubble Space Telescope would be a useless piece of junk instead of a national treasure without the Shuttle missions that first allowed for the repair of its defective vision and then returned to service the instrument in space multiple times over the ensuing decade.
According to Bush, "I think that the idea that we do not have a replacement for the Space Shuttle, that we mothballed it and didn't have a replacement, is outrageous.
"When we have to rely on the Russians to get payload up to the Space Station, that's just totally wrong. And the lack of planning, the lack of interest in this I think is dangerous for our national security, for our military purposes."
