Russia and US are to increase the number of joint experiments onboard the ISS

March 25, 2015

The share of joint Roscosmos/NASA experiments on the International Space Station (ISS) is to significantly increase with the start of the one-year-long mission of the Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko and US astronaut Scott Kelly.

During the one-year mission which will last from March 27, 2015 through March 3, 2016, the Russian cosmonaut and the US astronaut are to perform 19 biomedical experiments. In particular, M. Kornienko is to perform 14 Russian experiments dedicated to space medicine and physiology. These are experiments "Algometry", "Vzaimodeistvie-2", "DAN", "Cardiovector", "Content", "Correction", "MORZE", "Motocard", "Neuroimmunity", "Parodont-2", "Movement of fluids", "Pilot-T", "Splankh" and "UDOD". Specifically, the "Movement of fluids" experiment belongs to joint studies of Russian and US scientists and will be carried out by the two participants of the one-year mission using scientific equipment on the Russian and US segments of the ISS.

The Russian cosmonaut also gave his consent to participate in five US experiments: "Fine Motor Skills", "Ocular Health", "Reaction Self-Test", "Sleep Monitoring", "Cognition". In his turn, the US astronaut Scott Kelly consented to participate in two Russian experiments "Pilot-T" and "Vzaimodeistviye-2".

The number of joint experiments is to increase as early as Expedition ISS-43, from which the one-year mission starts. The Russian-US experiments planned within the framework of ISS-43 (March 12 through May 14, 2015) will amount to about one-tenth of all the studies and for the most part will be related to activities in the field of space medicine.

Staying in orbit during the period of March 12 through 28 will be a crew of three consisting of a Roscosmos cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov, a NASA astronaut Terry Virts and ESA astronaut Samantha Cristoforretti. Later on, they will be joined by crewmembers of Soyuz TMA-16M, Russians Gennadi Padalka and Mikhail Kornienko, and an American Scott Kelly.

The launch of the manned transportation spacecraft Soyuz TMA-16M carrying the Russian cosmonauts Gennadi Padalka, Mikhail Kornienko and the US astronaut Scott Kelly is scheduled for March 27, 2015.
