You are invited to JSC's SAIC/Safety and Mission Assurance (S&MA) Speaker Forum featuring Wayne Hale, Former Space Shuttle Program Manager & Flight Director.
Wayne Hale will share and discuss the following points:
- The NASA Organizational culture
- The importance of dissenting opinions
- The role financial considerations play in critical decisions
- The importance of going the extra mile - Doing 99 things right and 1 thing wrong can lead to disaster
Wayne Hale is retired from NASA after 32 years and is currently a consultant for SAS and full time grandpa. Hale began his career with NASA in the Propulsion Systems Section of Flight Operations at JSC in 1978. He became a lead propulsion systems officer in Mission Control and later headed the Propulsion Systems Section from 1985 to 1988. Hale also oversaw flight control teams in Mission Control during all aspects of 40 space shuttle missions, including 28 overseeing the critical ascent and entry phases. His last two years as a flight director were spent as deputy chief flight director for shuttle operations.
Hale served as the program's deputy manager following the Columbia accident and chaired the program's Mission Management Team. Before that, he was the launch integration manager at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, Fla. He has received many honors and awards, including the NASA Space Flight Awareness Leadership Award, the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal, the NASA Exceptional Service Medal, and numerous NASA Group Achievement Awards.
Wayne Hale authored Chapter 7: "Flying the Shuttle: Operations from Preparation Through Flight to Recovery" In "Space Shuttle Legacy", a group of highly qualified experts including historians, political scientists, public administrators, engineers, and scientists have combined to answer the question - what is the legacy of the Space Shuttle?
