One thing you all should remember , the shuttle hardware exists, years of testing and design & problem correction are included. Do not discount this factor, this is very significant in any complex system development. Also, you can return large payloads to earth to a runway. THE SHUTTLE HAS MANY CAPABILITIES.
In any efficient space transportation system, the shuttle concept will be used.
It makes zero sense to build vehicles to go to mars, moon, astroids, or just to service ISS .
Furthermore, these vehicles do not exist, with the exception of space x and they are all a long way from being operational. If we continue down the non shuttle concept path, we are going to waste a lot of time and money and wind up with minimal capability.
It will be decades before we get back to the shuttle capability we had last year.
So, before you waste money on your FightForSpace program, give serious thought to the direction you are selecting.
Also, if you have any contacts in Romney camp, better convince him to restart shuttle, or the USA space capability will not return to last year's capability for decades.
You might want to discuss with Bob Thompson, SPM in the early Shuttle development, and Norm Chaffee, a retired PPD engineer.
