Today in spaceflight history: The first space shuttle launched in 1981

On the morning of April 12, 1981 NASA launched a mission that would define space exploration for a generation. Today marks the 34th anniversary of Space Shuttle Columbia's launch from Cape Canaveral.

NASA Astronauts John Young, the pilot and Bob Crippen, the commander were strapped into the first re-usable spacecraft. It was also the first time in history a new spacecraft launched on its maiden voyage with a crew.

 

The video above is a great example of how much new technology was used the day of Columbia's first launch. The new acronyms the anchor explains became normal spaceflight lingo for those of us who grew up watching launches from our backyards in Florida or on TV around the world.

Columbia would leave another legacy on Feb. 1, 2003 when the spacecraft and her seven crewmembers were lost on re-entry.
