It is strictly political. A fair evaluation of the shuttle and the shuttle concept as compared to expendable capsules results in the shuttle being the optimum choice. The Russians don't understand why we cancelled it. The Chinese are developing their own. So for what ever reason the " powers running the NASA " which we all know is BHO do not want American Preeminence in space for whatever reason. Chris Kraft wrote a paper essentially saying SLS/Orion can not succeed, as Space Consultant Don Nelson says the same Re: nasaproblems.com.
Our hope is with a new administration who may have people with the right frame of mind or for the Chinese to make rapid progress to develop their on so that the fear factor arises as occurred with the Russians in the late 50' and early 60's during the Sputnik / Space Race era.
