The following is a response to the article by a former NASA official.

Yikes! How about this assessment? Unfortunately this nightmare is explained by Mr. Albrecht exactly as I see it! I don’t see signs of capable leadership anywhere in our Government including NASA that will change this situation in the near term. We took the leadership of human spaceflight away from the old Soviet Union and now after spending billions of dollars and years of hard work, we have now defaulted human travel to and from earth orbit to Russia; and a result the fees we are paying them for this service is financing their operations. We are bankrolling Russia’s Space Program when we should be putting that money into our own! American is apparently willing to do this for the next 5 to 6 or more years. In doing this we are not only giving up America’s leadership in HSF, we are also in the process of observing our engineering and technical capability established to advance the future technology of human spaceflight decline. NASA’s way forward is characterized as the equivalent of the “Bridge to Nowhere” in Mr. Albrecht’s book “Falling Back to Earth” Egads! has it come to this? I am hoping that it is really just a bad dream and that I will wake up to find that it is not true.
