Commercial space companies are pushing back against NASA deciding if their rockets are safe enough to carry commercial crews to the International Space Station, according to the space agency's chief administrator in Huntsville. The "touchy part" of so-called "human rating certification" for private spacecraft is whether the companies must follow NASA standards even if NASA crews aren't on board, Marshall Space Flight Center acting Director Gene Goldman said during a luncheon talk in Huntsville Tuesday. "If NASA astronauts are the crew, then we want to have quite a bit of say-so in how those systems are certified," he said. But if the crews are private, "we will certainly have less of an input." NASA has hard-won expertise in human spaceflight, including failures, Goldman said.
